Frequently asked questions

Find out everything you need to know about auctions held at our auction house.

Submitting a bid constitutes acceptance of the following auction conditions.

  1. The auction takes place voluntarily and on the bidder’s own behalf and for his own account against immediate cash payment in euros to the auctioneer. Checks are accepted in payment, but for new customers only if they are confirmed bank checks. Payment in installments can only be granted after prior agreement with the auctioneer.
  2. The highest bidder wins the bid. However, the auctioneer has the right to refuse the knockdown, withdraw, regroup or divide lots. In the event of equal bids, the first bidder wins the bid. In the event of misunderstandings, the auctioneer has the right to offer lots again. The minimum bid is 6 euros. Bids under 6 euros cannot be considered.
  3. Our bid levels must always be adhered to. All interim bids are automatically rounded up to the next highest bidder level. The bids are carried out in conformity with the customer’s interests.
  4. The buyer’s commission for the auctioneer is 23.8% of the knockdown price. In addition, there is a fee of € 2.38 per lot plus shipping costs. All lots are subject to differential taxation in accordance with §25a of the Value Added Tax Act, therefore VAT cannot be shown. This regulation only applies to customers within the EU. For our Swiss customers and customers outside the EU, the regulations of Stade Auktionen GmbH, Bärmeggenweg 6, CH-4314 Zeiningen www.stade-auktionen.ch apply.
  5. Knockdown constitutes a binding sale. The risk is transferred to the purchaser when the bid is accepted. Anyone bidding on behalf of a third party is liable as a debtor in addition to the third party. The purchased lots are shipped against prepayment. The lots remain the property of the seller until full payment has been made.
  6. The auctioned lots are due for payment within 5 days of receipt of the auction invoice. Alternatively, the buyer can grant Stade Auktionen GmbH & Co KG a SEPA basic mandate / SEPA company mandate. The direct debit shall be collected within 10 days of the invoice date without deduction. The period for pre-notification will be shortened to 2 days. The buyer warrants to ensure that the account is covered. Costs incurred due to non-payment or chargeback of the direct debit shall be borne by the buyer as long as the non-payment or chargeback was not caused by Stade Auktionen GmbH & Co. KG. If no payment has been received 3 weeks after the invoice date, the amount will be collected by legal means, incurring costs (€ 5.00 per reminder and default interest of 1.5% per month).
  7. If the dutiful acceptance is refused, the buyer loses his rights to the knockdown and the item can be sold by private treaty or auctioned again at his expense without prior notification. In this case, the original purchaser is liable for the loss of profit. However, he is not entitled to any additional proceeds and will not be admitted to further bids. The auctioneer may collect and sue for purchase money, arrears of purchase money and ancillary performance claims in his own name.
  8. The auction lots are described carefully and conscientiously, but without any obligation on the part of the auctioneer and without any guarantee of authenticity.
  9. Complaints must be received by the auctioneer no later than eight days after acceptance or delivery of the lots in question. Lots with contents must be unchanged, i.e. in their original condition (with original cover and original label), otherwise any complaint is excluded.
  10. The lot numbers and bids must be clearly entered and checked again by the bidders for correctness. Complaints cannot be considered under any circumstances if incorrect lot numbers or bids are entered.
  11. Claims of any kind against the consignor or the auctioneer must be asserted within a preclusive period of six weeks after the auction date.
  12. Complaints about collections or collector’s lots are excluded as a matter of principle, the auction will take place as is.
  13. Lots will not be sent for inspection.
  14. The auctioned goods will be kept under lock and key at our premises until the day of the auction. Two weeks before the respective auction, the auctioned items can be viewed at our business premises, Markgrafenstraße 5 in 79639 Grenzach-Wyhlen, by appointment by telephone.
  15. The auctioneer reserves the right to exclude persons from the auction without giving reasons. The auction conditions are binding for consignors, auction participants and bidders even without written acceptance. Submitting bids, placing purchase contracts or bidding personally at the auction constitutes acceptance of our general auction conditions.
  16. The place of jurisdiction is Lörrach and the place of performance is Grenzach-Wyhlen.

We understand that for many collectors the personal appraisal of a potential auction lot is a crucial part of an auction. We therefore offer the opportunity to inspect the items up for auction in advance at our premises in Grenzach-Wyhlen.

Visual inspection allows you to experience the quality, condition and uniqueness of each piece at close quarters, giving you a comprehensive picture before you place your bid.

Current viewing options for the 67th auction

Viewing of the lots in the current auction is possible from 20 January to 1 February 2025. To ensure a smooth process and individual advice, please arrange your viewing appointment in advance at +49 (0) 76 24 98 95 870 or info@stade-auktionen.de.

Our live auctions on the Internet offer you an opportunity to take part in our auctions in an interactive and dynamic manner. Simply register at www.philasearch.com and be there when the virtual auctioneer calls up the lots in the order of their numbers.

How online bidding works

  • Prior to the auction: Prior to the start of the live auction, you can place your bid in advance or set higher bids for automatic consideration during the auction.
  • During the live auction: When the live auction starts, you become part of the virtual action, where each bid is presented step by step. With just one click on the “Bid” button, you can participate in real time and place your bid. Watch live as the auctioneer offers each lot “first, second and third” and finally knocks it down to the highest bidder.

We have developed a clear and fair bidding system to make the bidding process transparent and fair for all participants.

  • Starting bid: For each lot that we put up for auction, bidding starts at a minimum bid of 6 euros. Unfortunately, we cannot consider bids below this amount.
  • Increase in favor of the bidder: In the case of so-called “bid lots”, the bid is always increased in the bidder’s favor. For example, if you bid 50 euros and no one else bids, you will receive the lot for 6 euros. If another bid is at 10 euros, it will be raised to 12 euros according to our bidding levels.
  • Intermediate bids: Please note that intermediate bids such as 12.50 euros or 13.00 euros will be rounded up to the next higher bid level. This means that a bid of 13 euros automatically becomes a bid of 14 euros.

Bid steps: Our bid steps are defined as follows:

 Bid span from  to  Step
From 6 euros  to 20 euros  2 euros
From 20 euros  to 100 euros  5 euros
From 100 euros  to 500 euros  20 euros
From 500 euros  to 1000 euros  50 euros
From 1000 euros  to 5000 euros  100 euros
From 5000 euros  to 9500 euros  500 euros
 From 10,000 euros  1000 euros

This structure is intended to help you to plan your bids effectively and maximize your chances at the auction.

We present a carefully curated selection of postcards, many of which were once sent by post. We describe each lot with meticulous accuracy, documenting the condition of each postcard in detail. Nevertheless, the appreciation of each item remains a personal matter.

To help you with your assessment, we use a clear rating system:

= Excellent, in immaculate, freshly printed condition

I-II = Good to very good condition with some traces (slightly stained, slight crease, corners and edges slightly bumped)

II = Good condition with clearly visible defects (stains, corner crease, stronger traces of bending, small tears, adhesive and paper remnants)

You are welcome to view the lots in person before bidding to get a personal impression of their condition. In this case, please inform us in advance of the lots you wish to inspect. This way we can ensure that everything is ready for your viewing appointment and avoid unnecessary waiting times.
